NEWS & EVENTS: JULY 2009
GREAT FUN AT THE USD WINE CLASSIC, 7.26.09

KIMMEL VINEYARDS was pleased to participate in the first annual USD Wine Classic on July 26, 2009. The fundraiser was a benefit for student scholarships and we we were in good company with notable wineries such as CAYMUS, CHALK HILL, and WHITEHALL LANE among others and over 400 attendees. This event featured many University of San Diego affiliated wineries with wines poured by the owners and winemakers.

The USD Wine Classic included gourmet-paired food, music, networking and slient auction. We poured our 2007 Chardonnay and a "sneak preview" of our 2007 Merlot. Representing Kimmel Vineyards was Lillian, Jim, Debby, Jason, Bruce Regalia and Erin O'Brien. The 2007 Chardonnay and not-yet-released 2007 Merlot were poured to the guests as they sampled gourmet food prepared by the University. Both wines received many very nice comments. (We can unofficially say that Kimmel Vineyards was voted the friendliest winery with the BEST wines!)

Both of our beautifully crated 3-packs of wine donated to the auction sold for $140. They included three bottles of the 2007 Chardonnay. Pictured above are auction winners Scott and Sunnie Manly next to Lillian Kimmel.

Mark your calendars for next year's event! The University already reserved July 25 and has asked us to participate again. We look forward to seeing old Friends as well as meeting new ones..

The 2009 vintage is underway. The weather has not been bad this year and we are keeping our fingers crossed as we look towards bloom and fruit set. We will be able to report on the crop in another few weeks.

Last month the Family and some Friends met at the winery in Calistoga. Until we are ready to build our own winery on the Ranch, our wine is made at Madrigal Vineyards. They are great people and make excellent wine if you are looking for other wines that we do not produce at this time. Two days were spent tasting our 2007 Merlot and 2008 Chardonnay as we prepare to bottle both wines in July.

While the tasting looks like fun [it is!!!], it is serious business as final decisions are made to ensure the very best juice is selected for each wine.

The 2007 Merlot should be ready in November in time for the holidays. It does not need to lay down as long as the Chardonnay, but we will taste and make that decision in late October. The 2008 Chardonnay will be released late Spring or early Summer 2010. As time goes along, we plan to hold back release dates so that the wine can get additional age in the bottle.

DINING OUT WITH KIMMEL VINEYARDS

We are very excited and proud to have THE OCEANAIRE in San Diego add our 2007 Chardonnay to their wine list. The restaurant has been awarded the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence the last several years and is considered by many magazines and critics to be the finest seafood restaurant in San Diego. The Executive Chef is Brian Malarkey who has garnered many local awards including Best New Restaurant, Best Seafood, and Best Fine Dining along with Best Chef in 2007. THE OCEANAIRE prides itself in the serving of ultra-fresh seafood and exceptional service. From the moment you enter the restaurant you fell a sense of a place and time akin to a classic 1930's ocean liner. The menu is based entirely on market availability, so selections always change, sometimes by the hour. When in San Diego, you will not be disappointed with a visit to THE OCEANAIRE.
